Addis Ababa, December 29, 2020 - Two senior officials of Benishangul Gumuz region were arrested today in connection with the killing in Metekel Zone, according to reports from Benishangul Gumuz Communications Office.

The two senior officials were Metekel Zone Administrator, Atinkut Shitu, and Benishangul Gumuz region Police Deputy Commissioner Inspector Misgana Enjifata.
The arrest comes after the Benishangul Gumuz Regional State Council met today and voted unanimously to revoke the immunity of four members of the council who were suspected of involvement in Metekel incident and vowed to hold any official involved to account.
Although the four members of the regional council were arrested a week ago, their immunity was revoked today during the 5th year, 6th round emergency meeting of the Benishangul Gumuz Regional State Council.
These were Adgo Amsaya, ex Deputy President of Benishangul Gumuz regional state, Shiferaw Chelibo, ex Director General of the region’s Science and Technology Agency, Girma Meni, member of the regional Council and Arega Balbid, ex senior official of Metekel Zone.
Thomas Kuwi, State Minister of Social Affairs at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, and Banding Mara, Metekel Zone Prosperity Party office Head, were also arrested in connection with the massacre in Metekel a week ago.
