More than 30 civilians killed during TPLF’s indiscriminate heavy shelling of Wuchale and Chifra towns, Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, October 19, 2021 - The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) carried out an indiscriminate heavy shelling of Wuchale and Chifra towns of North Wollo, Amhara region, killing more than 30 civilians.

According to Ambasel Woreda Communications office chief, Habte Melese, who talked with the BBC Amharic, 9 civilians were killed in the indiscriminate shelling by TPLF on Chifra town alone.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) released a statement yesterday denouncing TPLF’s random shelling of civilians in Amhara and Chifra after its failure to choke the Djibouti-Addis route.

“They have indiscriminately targeted and shelled civilian villages namely Chifra and Wuchale lately and killed more than 30 civilians at Wuchale alone”, said the MoFA.

“The Government of Ethiopia is deeply dismayed by the reticence of the international community to condemn the perpetuated atrocities of the TPLF. Adding salt to our injury is the seemingly pro-TPLF resolution of the European Parliament and the utterly biased statement issued following the US and its partners' high-level ministerial meeting over the situation in Northern Ethiopia,” added the statement released by the Ministry yesterday.

Russia to help Ethiopia build a strong navy

ADDIS ABABA, FEBRUARY 18, 2022 — A Russian Navy delegation led by Major General Alexander Ostrikov arrived in Ethiopia to visit Ethiopia's attempt to rebuild a modern navy, according to a report from Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF). Ethiopia's Chief of Naval Command, Commodore Walatsa Wacha, explained to the Russian Navy delegation that Ethiopian Navy was established three years ago and that they are working to build a strong and trained naval operations team capable of defending threats and further enhancing the military might of the Horn of African nation. According to the report from ENDF, the objective of the visit from the Russian Navy delegation is to strengthen the already thriving diplomatic relations between the governments of Ethiopia and Russia.
