University students from Tigray and Woldia to be enrolled to other Universities while TPLF reportedly turns Universities in Tigray into war colleges
Addis Ababa, October 19, 2021 - The Ethiopian Ministry of Education said today that it will start registering students from Universities in Tigray and Woldia to temporarily transfer them other Universities.
Since TPLF started the war
in Tigray on November 04, 2020, thousands of students were unable to continue their
education. Even after TPLF took control of Mekelle, the university in the
capital and others are allegedly being used as war colleges. Instead of
allowing students to return to their education, TPLF has been investing heavily in turning them into soldiers. The TPLF even went on to invade North Wollo of the Amhara region and parts of Afar region to displace many students from their studies.
Those students who left Tigray and the TPLF occupied areas in Amhara have been protesting at the then Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MoSHE) head office in Addis Ababa. They have been demanding that the government listen to their plea to enroll them in other institutions where there is stability. Nevertheless, their plea has been falling on deaf ears for some time now.
However, after the formation of the new government, the newly formed Ministry of Education (MoE), headed by the veteran opposition party leader Professor Birhanu Nega, seems to have finally heard the 10,500 students who are demanding to be transferred to other universities.
Today, October 19, 2021, the Ministry of Education announced that students from universities in Tigray and Woldia will be allowed to temporarily be enrolled to other universities in Ethiopia.
Accordingly, the ministry has opened an online portal where these students can register starting today up until October 22, 2021. Despite the fact that some of these students have been complaining that they left their educational documents in the war zone, the ministry said they ought to submit their educational documents when registering online.
As for those students who remain in Tigray and occupied parts of the Amhara region, their chances of being turned into fighters by the TPLF is much more likely than their chances of continuing their education amid TPLF occupation.
